What is the purpose of Education Credential Evaluation and who needs them?

Education Evaluation is required for
  • Employment
  • College University Admissions
  • Licensing
Persons coming to the U.S. from foreign countries either to study or work must have their education credentials translated to determine the U.S. equivalency of their degrees, certificates, or work experience. Foreign credential evaluation is required for H1-B and other work related visas, college/university admissions, or professional licensing. Individuals who intend to come to the U.S. to work must apply for H1-B visa through the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). The USCIS requires a simple equivalency statement of the person’s education credentials along with the information about the institution where the person completed his or her studies and also the qualifications of the evaluator. The evaluation for H1-B Visa is relatively simple. More detailed evaluations are required for education, work experience, and professional licensing. Education related evaluations require a list of courses completed and grades obtained. These courses and grades are then translated into an equivalent course and grade of an accredited U.S. institution.

What is an Education Evaluation Report?

The Education Evaluation Report assesses the academic credentials issued by foreign institutions and determines the level of education, the number of years completed the specialization and the major area of study of the applicant. It then converts them into equivalent amount of study in the United States.

What does the Evaluation Report contain?

Depending on the type of evaluation, the educational evaluation report contains different levels of details.
  • General Education Evaluation report contains the academic credentials of the individual including the list and description of each degree, diploma, or certificate, the institution or institutions attended, the duration of education/training, and the U.S. equivalent of education credentials.
  • Detailed Educational Evaluation report contains all the information in the General Education Evaluation. In addition, this report provides the details of all post-secondary courses completed, the details and duration of these courses, the grade obtained at the home institution and the U.S. equivalent grade along with U.S. equivalent semester hours, U.S. equivalent grade point and the level to which the course relates to the undergraduate or graduate course in the U.S. This is also known as course by course evaluation and is required for CPA examination, teacher certifications, and licensing and membership in professional organizations.
  • Professional Work Experience Evaluation Report contains the details of the individual’s education, the U.S. equivalent and the professional experience using the "three-for-one" rule implemented by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. The "three-for-one" rule states that three years of an individual’s work experience can be substituted for one year of academic study which can be equated to a Bachelor’s degree in the U.S. This equivalency is only used for immigration purposes by the USCIS and cannot be used for admission to U.S. universities.

What are some of the specialty occupations?

Some of the specialty occupations are in the areas of Computer Science, IT, Business and Management, Culinary arts/Hospitality Management, Engineering (all disciplines). The list is not complete. A person may qualify for a specialty occupation by virtue of education, experience, or a combination of both.
